ꦏIn the first all-American final on U.S. soil since Sloane Stephens defeated Madison Keys to win the 2017 US Open, top seed Pegula came from a break down to win 7-5 6-2.
♏Pegula had dropped just one set all week, but Kessler looked set to change that when she rallied from 0-2 down to take a 4-2 lead in the first set.
🅠But too many unforced errors from Kessler saw Pegula claw her way back into the contest, and after the world number 56 missed a chance to break in the 11th game, it proved pivotal.
🍷Pegula was able to take the first set, but her opponent battled back in the second, breaking the top seed early on, only for the 31-year-old to seize control of the tie.
👍The world number four won the next four games, with the victory sealed against the serve as Kessler sent a forehand long.
Data Debrief: Lucky number seven for Pegula
ܫAfter losing three straight finals, the latest of which came to Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open at the end of last year, Pegula finally got herself over the line, this time on home soil.
ꦆPegula claimed a seventh WTA title and her first since she won the 1000 event at the Canadian Open last year, and she was worthy of her victory over Kessler.
☂She ended the contest having won 64% (25/39) of her first-serve points, while also converting six of the break points she made for herself.
൩It was also her first title in the U.S. in six years, and she will be looking to build on that momentum in the upcoming back-to-back WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.
