Biography
🍸Gursharanjot Singh Randhawa, better known as Guru Randhawa, was born on August 30, 1991, in Noorpur, a small village in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. Raised in a humble household, Guru discovered his love for music early on and began performing at small local events in his hometown. Seeking broader opportunities, he moved to Delhi, where he balanced his budding music career with academics, eventually earning an MBA. His stage name “Guru” was coined by rapper Bohemia, who shortened his full name during performances.
Guru’s official journey in the music industry began in 2012 with the song Same Girl, a collaboration with British-Indian singer Arjun. Although the song did not gain much traction, it was an important stepping stone in Guru’s career. In 2013, with the financial support of his elder brother Ramneek, he released his first single, Chhad Gayi, under Speed Records. This was followed by his debut album Page One, which included tracks like Dardan Nu, I Like You, and Southall🐻. Despite releasing several songs in the next two years, Guru struggled to gain widespread recognition.
The turning point came in 2015 when Bohemia recommended him to T-Series, leading to their collaboration on Patola. The track became an instant hit, gathering millions of views on YouTube and earning Guru his first major recognition. This success was followed by collaborations with Ikka Singh on Outfit and Khat. In 2016, Guru delivered back-to-back hits, including Yaar Mod Do with Millind Gaba, Tu Meri Rani, and the immensely popular Suit💛. These tracks not only showcased his versatility but also established him as a leading artist in Punjabi and Bollywood music.
By 2017, Guru had become a household name. His hit song Suit was recreated for the Bollywood movie Hindi Medium, marking his debut in the film industry. He further cemented his position with chartbusters like High Rated Gabru and Lahore, both of which crossed a billion views on YouTube. His emotional track Taare also gained attention, though its music video was criticized for resembling Zayn Malik’s It’s You. Guru’s songs were featured in Bollywood films like Tumhari Sulu and Simran, broadening his appeal to a pan-Indian audience.
In 2019, Guru collaborated with international pop icon Pitbull on Slowly Slowly. The track achieved global success, becoming one of the most-viewed music videos within 24 hours of release. That year, Guru also ventured into film production with the Punjabi movie Tara Mira. During the pandemic in 2020, he released Satnam Waheguru, a soothing devotional track, and Surma Surma🍌 with Jay Sean, showcasing his ability to adapt to various genres.
Guru continued to dominate the charts with hits like Mehendi Wale Haath, Doob Gaye, and Nain Bengali, which broke records by garnering millions of views within hours of release. His 2021 track Dance Meri Rani featuring Nora Fatehi became a viral sensation, further solidifying his global fan base. In 2022, songs like Designer, a collaboration with Yo Yo Honey Singh, and Punjabiyan Di Dhee🃏 kept him at the forefront of the Indian music industry.
ജFrom small-town performances to international collaborations, Guru Randhawa’s journey reflects his relentless passion and determination. Today, he is celebrated not just for his unique voice and catchy melodies but also for his role in taking Indian pop music to global heights.
