Alexander Zverev was stunned by Francisco Comesana, who pulled off a comeback win to reach the semi-finals of the Rio Open. (More Sports News)
⛎Comesana earned the biggest win of his career by knocking out the world number two, triumphing 4-6 6-3 6-4 in two-and-a-half hours to reach the final four for the first time at tour level.
♍Zverev started well, earning a break in the first game, and despite the Argentine levelling the score, he went another break up to take the first set. Comesana then controlled the second though, and Zverev could only defend three of the four set points he faced at the end of the set.
ꦆIt looked like the German would then storm to the win after taking a commanding 4-1 lead in the decider, but Comesana fought back, earning consecutive breaks as he reeled off five games in a row to secure the upset.
ಞ"I was repeating to myself throughout the match, 'How good it is to be alive'. So, I was enjoying the entire match," Comesana said in his on-court interview.
💞"I think it is because [of] all the hard work I have been doing to be here. I have to be grateful for this moment and I am enjoying [it]."
🍬He will face Alexandre Muller in the semi-finals, with the Frenchman causing a shock of his own to get through the last eight.
🐈Muller brushed aside fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-5 6-1 later on Friday, becoming the first French semi-finalist in Rio history.
☂Cerundolo had been aiming to become just the third player to reach three semi-finals at the event, following Rafael Nadal and Fabio Fognini.
