LeBron James says he finds it "humbling" to find his name alongside Michael Jordan's after making NBA history in the Los Angeles Lakers' win on Thursday. (More Sports News)
♐James (40 years and 38 days) is the oldest player ever in the NBA to score 40 points, while he is just the second to hit that mark as a 40-year-old, along with Jordan (40y 4d in February 2003).
ꦺHis 42 points helped the Lakers to a 120-112 win over the Golden State Warriors, though had to hold on after blowing most of a 26-point lead as Stephen Curry kept his side in it with 37 points.
🌃James got the better of their latest duel, though, also adding 17 rebounds and eight assists while shooting at 14-for-25.
꧟Asked how it felt to join the exclusive club alongside Jordan, his childhood hero, James said: "What do I think? That I'm old! That's what I think. I need a glass of wine and some sleep; that's the first thing I think about.
♓"The biggest thing is we got the win, obviously. But throughout my journey, anytime I've been named or in the category or, whatever the case, crossed paths with any of the greats, it's always humbling.
♛"Just to know where I come from. And I love the game so much. So, it's pretty cool."
👍He helped the Lakers to a 10th win in 12 games, and they sit fifth in the Western Conference, a game behind fourth-place Houston Rockets.
❀While James racked up a new record on Thursday, he is also the youngest player in NBA history to score at least 40 points in a game (getting 41 for the Cleveland Cavaliers in March 2004 at 19y 88d).
ꦬ"I think with LeBron, we've run out of words and superlatives and descriptions to sort of capture what he's doing at this stage of his career and at this age," said Lakers coach JJ Redick.
💎"It continues to be remarkable; it really does. And he really led us."
