🌼The awards to be presented are primarily the Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Arjuna (lifetime) and Dronacharya honours. Khel Ratna awardees receive a cash prize of INR 25 lakh, along with a citation and a medallion. Arjuna awardees are honored with a cash reward of INR 15 lakh, a statuette of Arjuna, and a citation.
The controversy around Manu Bhakerꦰ's initial exclusion from the Khel Ratna nominations eventually died down with her name mentioned in the list. But a fresh controversy surfaced on the eve of the awards ceremony, with the Delhi high court asking the central government's selection committee to reconsider the candidature of Paralympian discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya for the Khel Ratna.
"The decision by the Delhi High Court to direct a reconsideration of my Khel Ratna Award application is a moment of hope, not just for me but for every para athlete striving for excellence. It’s about more than medals; it’s about equal respect and recognition for the efforts we put in to represent our country. I am confident that this scrutiny will uphold the values of fairness and justice, and I am optimistic about the outcome," Kathuniya told Outlook Sports.
♒The Khel Ratna honour, formerly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, is now called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award after the legendary Indian hockey player. While Kathuniya's case is still unresolved, Bhaker, Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, world chess champion D Gukesh and Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar are slated to receive the award.
