Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam claimed 5-49 as Bangladesh hit back to leave the first Test against South Africa in parity despite being bowled out for 106 in its first innings on Day 1. Thanks to Taijul, who became only second Bangladeshi bowler after Shakib Al Hasan to reach 200 wickets, Bangladesh reduced South Africa to 140-6 before bad light brought a premature end to the day. At stumps, the Proteas' lead was 34 runs after a day when 16 wickets fell, with Kyle Verreynne batting on 18 with Wiaan Mulder on 17. The Proteas are in Bangladesh for a two-match Test series -- part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. The second match in Chattogram is scheduled for October 29 to November 2. As things stand, South Africa and Bangladesh are 6th and 7th, respectively, in the WTC table. India, who lost a home Test to New Zealand for the first time in 36 years, still lead the pack ahead of Australia and Sri Lanka. The Kiwis are fourth, ahead of England. Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies make up this exclusive, nine-team affair which will decide the world Test champions next year with the Lord's final, to be contested by the two top teams.
