🔥Amid the political upheaval in South Korea, the country has conducted another impeachment vote. This time, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who was serving as the acting president, has been impeached.
The acting president's impeachment comes two weeks after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
♕A total of 192 lawmakers voted in favour of Han Duck-soo's impeachment. The majority of votes needed for impeachment stands at 151.
🍬Prime Minister Han took over as acting president after the National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon. Yoon was impeached after his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3, 2024.
♛The prime minister was appointed as acting president in order to lead South Korea out of the political turmoil caused by Yoon's declaration of martial law. However, opposition MPs have alleged that PM Han was refusing the demands to complete the president's impeachment process.
Han's impeachment continues to case chaos in the country's parliament ൩as the ruling People Power Party has challenged the validity of the vote.
🔴In the National Assembly, 200 votes were needed to impeach President Yoon. However, during Friday's vote, speaker Woo Won-shik announced that only 151 votes would be needed to pass the impeachment bill against Han.
ꦡWith the prime minister also impeached, finance minister Choi Sang-mok is set to replace Han as the acting president.
🌱Along with the impeachment motion for Han, the National Assembly, which is controlled by the opposition, called for appointing three Constitutional Court justices to start the impeachment process for President Yoon.
𓆏South Korea's constitutional court has a total of nine justices. However, the court currently has only six, after three judges announced their retirement. These vacancies are yet to be filed. Once the bench is at full capacity, the trial will determine whether Yoon Suk Yeol will be removed from office or reinstated to complete his full term.
