Biography

꧋Hugh Jackman was born in Sydney, New South Wales, to Grace McNeil (née Greenwood) and Christopher John Jackman, an accountant who studied at Cambridge. His parents, originally from England, moved to Australia in 1967 under the "Ten Pound Poms" immigration scheme. Because of his British-born parents, Hugh holds both Australian and British citizenship. On his father’s side, one of his great-grandfathers, Nicholas Isidor Bellas, was of Greek heritage from what is now Greece. Hugh’s parents were devout Christians, having converted after attending Billy Graham’s evangelistic meetings.

💎Hugh grew up with four older siblings and a younger half-sister from his mother’s second marriage. He was the second of his parents’ children to be born in Australia. When he was eight, his parents divorced, and his father stayed in Australia with Hugh and his two brothers, while his mother moved to England with his two sisters.

💃As a child, Hugh loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time camping, going to the beach, and exploring Australia during school holidays. He was curious about the world and dreamt of becoming a chef on an airplane because he thought someone must cook the meals served on flights.

Hugh attended Pymble Public School and later Knox Grammar School, an all-boys school in Sydney. There, he participated in a school production of My Fair Lady🐷 in 1985 and became the school captain in 1986. After finishing high school, he took a gap year in 1987, working as a Physical Education teacher at Uppingham School in England.

Returning to Australia, Hugh studied Communications at the University of Technology, Sydney, graduating in 1991. In his final year, he joined a drama class to earn extra credits. He performed in Václav Havel’s The Memorandumꦡ, which sparked his interest in acting. Reflecting on that time, he said he felt more connected with the drama class than he had during the rest of his university studies.

After earning his degree, Hugh took a one-year acting course called "The Journey" at the Actors’ Centre in Sydney. He realized acting could become his career, even though he initially saw it as just a hobby. At that time, he turned down a role in the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours♊ to study acting full-time at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in Perth. He graduated from WAAPA in 1994.

🍨Hugh admitted that acting didn’t come naturally to him at first and that he felt like the least talented student in his class. However, he saw this as a challenge that motivated him to improve. He believes that working hard to prove himself during auditions has helped him grow as an actor.
