Uttarakhand is all set to become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code. As peꩲr the announcement by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, UCC will come into effec🌼t across the state on Monday - January 27, 2025.
This implementation also comes a day before Prime Ministe꧋r Narendra Modi's visit to Uttarakhand.
As per Dhami, the UCC will helpಌ bring about "uniformity🍷 in society and ensure equal rights and responsibilities for all citizens."
With 392 ♎sections across seven chapters and four parts, the Uniform Civil Code will bring about common laws and rules for all citizens to follow.
With a focus on equality, the state government 🥀drafted new laws, espওecially for women in matters of property, marriage, divorce and alimony.
Despite the controversy sparked regarding the new mandatoryꦛ registration for live-in relationships, the code is set to come int🧔o effect from Monday onwards.
Congress on Sunday slammed the Uttarakhand government for implementing the Uniform Civil Code. Speaking to reporters, Congress spokesperson Abhishek⛦ Singhvi said 🐼the uniform civil code cannot be state-specific.
"Can a uniform civil code be state-specific? You talk of the 'uniform' civil code and then make it state-s🐬pecific," he said, adding that UCC is "nothing but an attempt to fast-track the process, to have a pilot project, before you can impose... because you don't have a consensus. So you do it like kickstarting a⛄ pilot project."
He further 𒈔asked how a code that is meant to bring uniformity across the country vary from state to state.
