Mahakumbh Stampede: 30 Dead, 60 Injured; CM Yogi Announces Rs 25 Lakh Ex-Gratia, Judicial Inquiry

A ‘stampede-like’ situation broke ☂out at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj early Wednesday after a large number of pilgrims turned up to take a dip in Sangam on the occasion of ‘Mauni Amavasya’. The incident occurred around 2 am where several people, inc🧜luding women and children, suffered injuries with some feared dead.

Ambulances and police vehicles rushed to the Sangam and injured people were taken to the central hospital in the Mela area. Although the exact count of casuღalties is not clear yet, several media reports said that at least 10 people are feared 𝓡dead and around 40 injured.

On Tuesday, a day before the Mauni Amavasya, nearly 5 crore people reached for the dip during the fair, according to estimates of the Uttar Pradesh government, which expects the crowd to be around 💧10 crore on♕ Wednesday.

Following the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president Mahant Ravindra Puri said that the seers have called off their Mauni Amavasya’s Amrit Snanꦰ.

“You would've seen what happened in the morning, and that's why we have decided to... All of our saints and seers were ready for the ‘snan’ when we were informed about this incident. That's why we have decided to call off our ‘snan’ on 'Mauni Amavasya',” Mahant Ravindra Puri told PTI.

As per the tradition, Akharas belonging to the three sects 'Sanyasi, Bairagi, and Udaseen' take the holy dip in a set sequence follow🃏ing a procession to the Sangam Ghat on special bathing dates like the Mauni Amavasya, which are marked by special celestial alignments and considered holy among Hindus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath follo෴wing a stampede-like incident early Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh, and called for immediate support measures.

The prime minister is continuously monitoring the situation in Kumbh and is constant contact with the state government. He has spoken with the chief minister three times till now and is giving directions for normalisation of the situation and relief, offici🌳al sources said.

"PM Mod💃i spoke to Yogi Ji about the situation at the Kumbh Mela, reviewed the deveღlopments, and called for immediate support measures," an official said.

Although the exact count of casualties is not clear yet, several media reports said that at least 10 people are fea🐓red dead and around 40 injured.

“Some people have got injured and have been hospitalised after a barrier broke at the Sangam. We are yet to have the exact count of those injured,” PTI quoted 𒆙Akanksha Rana, Officer on Special Duty for the Mela.

Congress President Mallika🐈rjun Kharge slammed the central and state government for the 'stampede'like' situation at the Mahakumbh where many people are feared to have lost their lives.

"During the Maha Kumbh, the news of stampede on the banks of Teerthraj Sangam in which several people lost their lives and many others got injured is extre൲mely heart-rending," Kharge wrote on X.

"Half-baked arran🐠gements, VIP movement, paying more attention to self-promotion and mismanagement are responsiꦿble for this. Such arrangements despite spending thousands of crores of rupees are condemnable," the Congress chief said.

According to news agency Reuters, more than seven people were killed a💎nd a🅷round 10 injured in the Mahakumbh stampede.

"More than seven people have been killed in the stampede and around 10 others injured," the agency qu🦹oted an official who did n🍃ot want to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over several p🦩eople being injured in the st♚ampede at Sangam and underlined the need for enhanced surveillance at the event.

He called on the UP government to take im🃏mediate a🌌ction to support the injured and prevent further chaos.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath appealed to the pilgrims in Mahakumbh to take a dip in t✤he Ganga at their ꧙nearest ghats and not try to reach the Sangam Nose.

"All of you should follow the instructions of the administration and cooperate in making arrangeܫments. People are bathing peacefully at all the ghats of Sangam. Do not pay any 🐲attention to any rumours," he wrote on X.

Congress leader and Leader of Oppposition Rahul Gandhi expressed condolences for the victims of the Mahakumbh stampede. He slammed the government for mismanagement and focus on 🍌VIP culture.

"Mismanagement and administration's special focus on VIP movement instead of common devotees are responsible for this tragic incident. There is still a lot of time left for the Maha Kumbh, many more Mahasnans are to take place. The government should improve the system to prevent a tragic incident like today from happening again. VIP culture should be curbed and the government should make better arrangements to meet the needs of common devotees," he wrote on X.
He further requested Congress leaders and w👍orkers to help the affected families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the devotees who lost their loved ones and wished for the speedy recovery of t𒈔hose injured in the Mahakumbh stampede on Wednesday.

He said that he has spoken to CM Yogi and is constantly in touch with the UPstate goverꦬnment. The Prime Minister assured that the local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way.

Vaibhav Krishna, DIG🐓 Mahakumbh🌞 said that over 10 crore people are expected to visit Mahakumbh today. He assured that all police officials and personnel have been deployed in the Mela area for crowd regulation since Tuesday evening.

"People are bathing at all the ghats here peacefully... In the morning, there was pressure and a huge crowd. Many Akharas told us to regulate the crowd and that they would come out for the snan later. Now that the crowd is under control, our preparations for the Akharas and saints are in place. The Akhara Marg and Akhara Ghat are ready. The whole area is sanitised and we have conveyed this to the Akharas and they will soon start coming here for snan..." Krishna told ANI.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday slammed 💖Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge for his remarks about the Mahakumbh underway in Prayagraj and asserte🌟d hatred for "Sanatan Hindu Sanskruti" was deep rooted in the opposition party.

Earlier in the day, while addressing the Congress' 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' rally in Mhow in M💛adhya Pradesh, Kharge had asked if taking a holy dip in the Ganga during Mahakumbh would end poverty in the couಌntry.

"Shame on INC President Mallikarjun Kharge. Hatred for Sanatan Hindu 🎶Sanskruti is deep rooted in the Congress, and they have a habit of expressing it in public often. I strongly condemn this insulting remarks of INC President," Sawant said in a post on X.

Incidentally, 🐈during the day Union Home Minister Amit Shah had taken a holy dip in the Ganga at the Mahakumbh.

Du♚e to the stampede in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh 2025 mela, at least seven people are as💖sumed dead. News agency Reuters further added that at least 35 people have been injured due to the crowd crush.

An off♐icial update for the death toll🐽 is awaited from the UP government.

Expressing condolences to the devotees who lost their lives in the stampede, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took place at the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. I express my condolences to the bereaved families of the devotees who lost their loved 🐈ones in the accident and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. May God give strength to the bereaved families in this hour of grief.”

In view of the restrictions imposed after the stampede, Niranjani Akhara chief Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashanand Giri ji Maharaj said, "The government and the entire administration is involved in managing things her𓆏e. I just had a talk with (CM) Yogi ji ove🙈r several issues and he expressed his concerns. The Akhara will follow its tradition, however, it will be done on a small scale. We will go for symbolic 'Shahi Snan' in sometime."

Opposition leaders in Uttar Pradesh, including SP president Akhilesh Yadav, o♊n Wednesday targeted the Yo🃏gi Adityanath government over the stampede at the Maha Kumbh, saying it highlighted the failure of the state government.

Yadav demanded that t𝓰hose who claimed "world-class arrangements" in the Maha K🎃umbh should resign from their posts taking moral responsibility for the stampede.

"In order to re-establish faith in the system among the saint community and devotees who have come to the Maha Kumbh, it is necessary that the administration and management of the Maha Kumbh should be immediatel🐎y handed over to the army instead of the UP government," he said on X.

"Now that the truth of the claims of making world class arrangements has come out in front of everyone, those who were claiming and spreading false propaganda about it should resign from their posts taking moral responsiဣbility for the people killed in this accident," he said.

At 2 AM on Wednesday, a stampede broke out at the Maha Kumbh mela in Prayagraj. While the official death toll🌱 is yet to be announced, at least seven people hav🎀e been feared dead.

Visuals of a helicopter showering flower petals on seers were captured as saints head💯ed towards Sangam, Prayagrajꦕ, to take the sacred 'Amrit Snan' on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Led by Maha🤡nt Ravindra Puri, head of the Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad, the procession of akharas made its way on foot towards the Sangam for the holy bath. The procession, notably less grand than usual, began around 2:30 PM.

The Amrit snan was originally scheduled in the early hours of the day but was postponed following the stampede. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said a consensus has been reached with the akharas that they would take the ꦬhol🥀y dip only after the crowd pressure has decreased at the ghats.

After taking a holy dip during the sacred 'Amrit Snan' on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya on Wednesday, Akhil Bhartiya Akhada Parishad chief Mahant Ravindra Puri said, "All sain♍ts, seers and nagas took holy dip on the occasion. Commenting on the curr😼ent situation after the 'Amrit Snan' began𝔍, DIG Mahakumbh Vaibhav Krishna told ANI, "Juna Akhara and two other Akharas are going for Amrit Snan now. Everything is peaceful, situation is under control. Since there were a lot of devotees, the Akharas proposed to us that they would delay their Amrit Snan. This was a huge support from the Akharas to the administration...The injured in the stampede are undergoing treatment. No one is serious, everyone is out of danger."

Citing police sources, Reuters reported that nea💮rly 40 bodies have been brought to a hospital morgue near the site of a stampede at the 🎐Maha Kumbh.

However💖, there has been no official announcement of casualties from the local government, n൲early twelve hours after the stampede.

Expression condolence over the death of the devotees in the Maha Kumbh stampede, Union Minister Chirag Paswan said, "The incident is very unfortunate; I, on behalf of♕ my party, pay tributeౠs to those who died in this incident and also pray for speedy recovery of the injured. The unprecedented crowd of devotees visiting Prayagraj this time, all possible arrangements were made by the state government, so that the crowd could be managed... The reason for the stampede is being investigated. PM himself is monitoring this; he expressed his concern in today's Cabinet meeting as well."

Political leader🦂s across parties expressed grief over loss of lives in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, in a post on X in Hindi,🍎 said, "The news of many devotees losing their lives and many getting injured in the stampede at the Sangam banks of Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya is very sad and unfortunate."

"I pay my tri🔯bute to the devotees who lost their lives in this accident and express my deepest condolences to ꧒their families," Hooda said while wishing speedy recovery of the injured.

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, in a post on X, said, "The news of many devotees getting killed in a stampede in Maha Kumbh is very sad. Wi🍰shing speedy recovery to all those injured in this accide🅠nt."

Senior Congress leader Kumari Selja, who i♌s an MP from Haryana’s Sirsa, expressed grief over the incident and said the government should immediately improve the arrangements so that such incidents do not happen in future.

"The news of the tragic death of several devotees and many getting injured in the stampede at the Sangam banks during the Maha Kumbh is heart-breaking. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recওovery," she said in a post on X in Hindi.

According to Mahakumbh DIG Vaibhav Krishna, the stampede killed 30 people while 60 others were 🍸injur🐟ed. It has been reported that 25 of the 30 killed have been identified so far while 36 people undergoing treatment.

To moniꦍtor the situation of Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has postponed his visit to Delhi for election campaign tomorrow.

The pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam area killed at least 30 people while 60 others were injured as millions of pilgrims jostled fไor space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Commenting on the stampede, Uttar 𝓰Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath said, "The Govt has decided that a judicial inquiry of the incident will be done. For this, we have formed a 3-member judicial commission headed by Justice Harsh Kumar, former DG VK Gupta, and retired IAS DK Singh."

"We have been monitoring the entire incident from the Chief Minister's control room, the Chief Secretary's control room, and the DGP's control room throughout the day. Meetings went on throughout the day and there was continuous communication with the administration regarding the🌞 incidents. Since the morning, we have been receiving necessary guidelines from Prime Minister, Home Minister, National President JP Nadda, Railway Minister, Governor, and others", Yogi added.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesda💛y announced an ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh each for the kin of the deceased at the stampede at the Maha Kumbh. The state government officials informed that public that the tragic accident took the lives of at least 30 people and 60 others were injured.

The West Bengal government on Wednesday decided to send a team to Maha Kumbh a൲s it did not receive any information from the Uttar Pradesh administration about the condition of pilgrims from the state following a stampede ther💧e.

A team of o🍃fficials from the Resident Commissioner's office in New Delhi would go to Prayagraj to take stock of the situation, he added.

"We are unable𓂃 to get information about the conditions of those who have gone from our state to Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela. Attempts to get information from the UP government did not yield any result.

"Following this, we have decided to send a team from the office of the Resident Commissioner in New Delhi to Uttar Pradesh to understand the situation and condition of t⭕he pilgrims from West Bengal," the bureaucrat said.

Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjay Nishad on Wednesday expressed grief over the stampede in Mah🧸akumbh Nagar and said "minor incideꦬnts" do happen in "such a big event".

Nishad is the chief of the Nishad party and fisheries minister in the Yogi Adityanath🍃 governmꦡent.

"In such a big evꦡent and when there is such a huge crowd, minor incidents do happen," he said while calling it sad.

He said Chief Minister Adityanath is looking into this matter. One should take a bath wherever💯 one finds space and one should not b✱elieve in rumours, he added.
