Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is scheduled for wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister 🍬Narendra Modi on Monday. These discussions are expected to center on reinforcing economic ties and fostering deeper cooperation on key issues such as security a🍒nd regional stability.
Dissanayake began his first foreign trip since assuming office with a three-day visit to India on Sunday. On the first day of his vis𒊎it, Disanayaka held “fruitful” discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a pivotal diplomatic engagement between the two neighboring countries.
The meetings between President Dissanayake and India’s top diplomats focused on deepening bilateral relations and e𓂃xpanding strategic cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, and maritime security. The discussions also aimed to address mutual interests and enhance the overall partnership between Sri Lanka and India.
In a statܫement on social media platform ‘X’, Disanayake described his discussions with Jaishankar and Doval as “fruitful,” highlighting the positive tone of the talks. However, no official details have been released on the specific outcomes of these meetings.
In the talks, scheduled between P🅰M Modi and Dissanayake on Monday, India is likely to emphasize the need for Sri Lanka to address the aspirations of the Tamil community, particularly regarding the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution. This amendment provides for the devolution of power to the Tamil-majority provinces, a matter that has long been a point of contention in Sri Lanka’s post-civil war reconciliation process.
The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, highlighted that Disanayaka's visit would serve as an opportunity to further deepen India-Sri Lanka relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the visit would advance India’s vision of SAGAR (Se💧curity and Growth for All in the Region) and strengthen the 'Neighbourhood First' policy. Maritime security cooperation is expected to be a focal point during Disanayaka's visit, given Sri Lanka’s strategic locati🌊on. India has been actively supporting Sri Lanka’s defense forces, providing assistance in the form of offshore patrol vessels and other capacity-building measures to strengthen the island nation’s maritime security capabilities.
In addition to his diplomatic engagements, President Disanayaka will also meet Indian President Droupadi Murmu. The Sri L♍ankan leader is scheduled to attend a business event aimed at promoting investment and commercial ties between In𝓰dia and Sri Lanka.
He further plans t🦄o visit Bodh Gaya, an important Buddhis🍌t pilgrimage site in India.
