Shyam Benegal Funeral: Film Auteur Cremated With State Honours I Celebs Pay Last Respects

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal๊, the pioneer of 'new wave' cinema, breathed his last on December 23. He had been suffering from chronic kidney disease and died at around 6:30 pm at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital. Shyam Benegal's funeral took place today at Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium.

🎐The film auteur was laid to rest with state honours with a 21-gun salute. His friends from the industry and family attended the last rites.

Naseeruddin Shah, Gulzar𝐆, Javed Akhtar, Boman Irani, Rajit Kapur, Nandita Das, Divya Dutta, Ila Arun, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Shyam Kaushal, among others, paid their last respects to the legend.

ဣPoet and lyricist Gulzar told PTI, "It is not a time to start talking about it, what has happened, it will take time to sink. He hasn't departed, we have departed from him, and seen him off. He brought a revolution, he has gone with that revolution of change in cinema, nobody else will be able to bring that wave, revolution once again. We will remember him for a long time and we will talk about him for a long to come."

ಞLyricist Javed Akhtar condoling the death of Shyam Benegal said, "He (Shyam Benegal) was the father of parallel cinema. His contribution was very big in the realistic cinema''.

Shyam Benegal was the father of parallel cinema in India and is known for his films like Manthan, Ankur, Bhumika, Nishant, Mandi, Junoon, Kalyug and Zubeidaa among others.

ܫOver his career span, Benegal received several accolades, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest honour in cinema.

🌳He bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times and was also honoured with the V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
